your eyes open as you float out of the clutches of sleep, turned away from the center of the bed and out towards the window, the bright piercing light of the sun making you squint and burning your vision. you turn to face the ceiling, and realize that youβre back home, the one you moved out of five months ago.
you blink and the events of last night come rushing back, like how a wisp of smoke leads to a smoldering fire.
the pieces come to you faster than you remember. there was dinner at that new restaurant that you thought looked promising. osamu said yes, okay, but really, at the end of the dinner service, both of you unanimously agreed that it was terrible and all hype. you didnβt even manage to finish your plate.
you conspiratorially whispered behind your hand that he could cook it better (and cheaper) so he smirked and led you to a convenience store, grabbing whatever he needed and held your hand as he led you back home. his home. for the first time in five months.
you saw the apprehension on his face when you stood at his front door. you ignored it and stepped inside.

he hears you before he sees you.
"hey," daichi mumbles from his left. "it'sβ"
"i know," sugawara says frantically. "isβ"
"hey, guys," you greet, and both boys try to turn as coolly as they possibly can. it's not very successful, because you give them a funny look. "are you guys okay? is volleyball practice that intense?"
daichi straightens and clears his throat. "hi. um, yeah, a little. coach ukai's doubling down on the drills before interhigh."
"good luck with that," you say, before turning to sugawara. "hey, suga-san."
he tries his best to seem nonchalant. "hey."
you're not saying anything. why aren't you saying anything? was his 'hey' weird? was there something on his face? whatβ
daichi clears his throat again. "that reminds me, suga here has a question to ask."
what?! suga screamed internally. what are you talking about?!
"oh, um, sure," you say, cocking your head to the side a little bit (oh my god, you're so cute, sugawara thought desperately). "what's up?"
"iβuhβ" he stammered, before coughing. "um. what'd you... get? oβon theβon the... calculus test?"
you pout, nearly sending him into an agonizing spiral. "oh, god, don't remind me. i think i got an... 82?"
say something, he panicked, watching daichi's eyes widen in his direction, hidden away from you. say something! anything!
"uh, nothing," he lets out. "just, uh. asking."
"oh. uh, okay. what did you get?"
"um, a 91."
he watches you sigh dramatically and roll your eyes. "of course you did. you always score higher than me in calc."
he latches onto your words in a desperate attempt to keep the conversation going. "well," he starts, "i am better than you at calc..."
a girl passes by and calls out to you, and you wave and tell her you'll be right there. you turn back to him with mild annoyance. "talk to me when you're getting a better grade than me in bio."
"you mean in the next test?" he shoots back.
you roll your eyes. "whatever. bye, sugawara. see you, sawamura." and with that, you're gone.
"so," daichi says. "that went well."
"really?" suga says, turning to his friend with a hopeful look.
daichi looks at him with an 'are you kidding me?' expression. "no."
sugawara groans and catches his face in his hands.

you manage to avoid drama for a good few weeks.
a welcome relief, seeing as you and oikawa were the center of attention for a more-than-uncomfortable amount of time. but as high school was wont to do, you became old news quick, with some other couple receiving the brunt of the gossip.
you did, however, have a sneaking suspicion that iwaizumi was behind the damage control. and while you three, along with oikawa, got along more and grew closer, you never really got a chance to ask.
the general student body was more or less updated with the fact that you weren't together, but murmurings of, but they looked so cute! (gross) or they sure act like a couple (worse) floated around your classmates before ultimately being silenced.
thank god, you think, because if you'd been caught watching volleyball practice from the mezzanine balcony of the gym at the same time those rumors went around, you'd be well and fully screwed.
