June OWAC Skaven (Leader) and Skavenslaves

This is the way the challenge ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

For various reasons, I limped across the finish line for this year's Old World Army Challenge. Not a great year for me. This Grey Seer did turn out pretty well, even if it was the only figure I painted all month.

Last month I painted half of the slaves I had intended to paint, but at least the quantity was lucky number 13!

Due to landlord shenanigans, I lost use of the basement for painting and gaming, and have had to pack up and move most of my stuff into storage. Hopefully temporary, but not sure. The Skavenslaves were painted outside, which looks pleasant but is very difficult on my old eyes.

OWAC April - Clan Skryre

This month's entry is up at the Old World Army Challenge site. I used my wild card month to paint mostly Skryre troops/monsters/contraptions.

Pics below, but click the link above for the full entry.

Rats & Fungus

Skaven - Old World Army Challenge VI

As teased previously, I am participating in the Old World Army Challenge again this year. I can let the rat out of the bag now and fess up to painting the verminous Skaven this time around.

You can find my January entry pics and texts at the OWAC site. Group photo below, more at the link.

Shrumans

I recently learned there is a new-ish series based on a similar premise as my latest miniatures sidequest. I will have to check it out if I find some time. But with as little free time as I get, I'd rather paint, or game, or get outside if weather permits.

At any rate, I've been developing a backstory within my Althammer setting as I've been building and painting the little critters. I've also got some ideas for some other fungal-themed figures I'd like to try sculpting. What I would really love is to play some games with other human beings and make use of all this worldbuilding and modeling and painting.

At any rate, the Shroomfolk thing is getting out of hand, which isn't a bad thing. Below are seven more shruman figures. I have one more on the painting desk. After that, I need new host miniatures to infect. The old Citadel zombies (and some militia bits) have been working really well. I'll need to find some more and/or some alternate figures.

And one group shot of all of them together!

A Little Bit in the New Year

Failed on my End of Year/New Year entry. I'll get back to that and do it right. I've been busy & stressed out.

For now, here's a few things I've worked on latelyish.

Chaos familiar. I didn't fully appreciate how well the face was sculpted until I painted it. The whole range of familiars is really great. I've got an incomplete (half-ish?) set. Maybe I should collect the rest...

Santa brought Owlbro a family. :D

I just couldn't leave the figure alone. Too much color on the scythe. This time I'm really done. No more touch-ups...

Random new development.... 'shrumans. These are the first four.

The 'shrumans will compliment Fried's Shroomhost. I also painted the two big bruisers in the front last week. Would like to get a couple more, as well as some more variety of 'shroomfolk.

Sneaky OWAC teaser.

Warhammer -1313

I've had this idea lingering for years, and it has bubbled back to the surface. Oldhammer. No, not like that. This is Warhammer set in the in-universe past. Sort of like the War of the Beard campaign & lists published in WD long ago.

Based on my interests and collection, my setting would be sometime after the War of the Beard, but before Sigmar, and set in my favorite place in the Old World: The Wasteland/Westerland.

I like the idea of setting it in the time just before and after the cataclysm brought about by the strife between the Fimir and Skaven. Arbitrarily I'll set this around the year of the Imperial Calendar...

-1313

Two major factions would be the afore mentioned Skaven & Fimir. Two secondary, or maybe more like something between primary and secondary (prime-and-a-half-ary?) factions of humans and dwarfs. Dwarfs would be at a bit of a low point in their history, suffering not only from the toll of the War of the Beard, but supposedly the natural (or Slann and then Skaven/Fimir induced un-natural) disasters that came after, and the goblin incursions the followed that. Humans would be from the early migrations into this region, which (according to what I could tell from Warhammer lore) lagged behind the earlier human settlements in the future neighboring lands of Bretonnia and Tilea to the west and south respectively.

Tertiary forces or supporting characters could include goblins, undead, giants.

I've got a lot of this thought out already. The big, undecided portion for me is the humans. I fluctuate between envisioning them as early Celtic or Germanic tribes, and somewhat later Migration Period Germans (Goths, Vandals, or early Saxons). The depictions in Warhammer art & books seems to favor the former, but I feel that's a bit out of place. Maybe just "modern" in-world source biases of "everyone a few hundred years ago was a primitive barbarian" bias?

For the dwarfs, I definitely want a look that's different from my puff & slash mercenaries. There's quite a few options for dwarfs with an early medieval "dark ages" aesthetic, and that's what I'd probably aim for.  These would all be fairly small army projects.

Zoom Group Painting (and a bit of gardening)

This morning I participated in a Zoom "meet & paint" session with some of the other Warhammer-Empire.com regulars. I've been on the forum for thirteen years, and it remains my favorite (LAF is a close second) due to the diversity and quality of the membership.

Five of us took part, from three different countries. There was a bit of figuring out the tech for all of us. But it went well, and I really enjoyed getting to see & hear everyone. I particularly liked the peek into some of the other hobby spaces & projects. I had to duck out early on the call. Today was the one likely day this weekend (or all week, possibly) that the weather was going to cooperate for finally getting our gardens in order.

Here's what I worked on while we chatted....

Almost finished two Midlam Miniatures hobgoblins, started a third, and got the first base colors on the second batch of Cauldronborn powrie.

After both topics of past Warhammer-Empire campaigns and pikemen conversions came up, I pulled out a long unfinished project that I've wanted to return to. I converted a regiment of skaven pikemen (pikerats?) that I had started for the Treachery and Greed campaign. I even did a little article on converting the figures. But the painting never got past the first sample figure. I should remedy that.

The background to the regiment was that in addition to simply adopting Tilean methods of warfare, the cowardice of the Skaven welcomed any innovation that would help keep the enemy at a distance.

Kill Team & Memories

Over the weekend I played my first two games of Kill Team and enjoyed it quite a bit. There's a lot to like in the game. It was also great seeing old friends as well as meeting some new players. I'm looking forward to playing some more.

My 40k minis are all gone, and I have not yet painted my Meat Hating Robot Pirates -- and from the look of it, they're not very suited to proxy for anything in Kill Team. BUT, I did have something else, something old. My old Nurgle chaos cultists, which were built from old Skaven. I used them as proxies for the Genesteal Cult. Thus: Cheese-stealer Cultists. I just needed to paint two large aberrant (didn't get the second one completely finished... yet) and a model with a mining laser (old half finished jezzail conversion.)

I played two games, one against Eldar, the second against Tyranids. Opposite styles of play, and my Cheese-stealers were right about in the middle it seemed - not overwhelmingly good at close combat or shooting, but decent at each. So they did well.

I'm now looking into acquiring some legitimate Adeptus Mechanicus minis. (Though I may turn them into AdMech renegade meat hating robot pirates...)

In addition to playing a few games and visiting with friends, I rummaged through my friend Rich's collection and pulled out a few things to take home. I picked out some wormie things and some beat-up chaos knights, and a pair of old warriors. But the most important thing to me was to have one of his WWI planes. He's the reason I got into WWI aviation, both in terms of gaming and history. I chose an Albatros D.V -- my first love in planes of the period. I never had much luck with it, but I used this model many times over the years (decades!) in games of Blue Max & Canvas Eagles. It's a fine looking model of a fine looking plane. Maybe someday I will finish my own planes (currently stalled... haha) and play some more. Until then, I'll have this one out on display.

I couldn't pass this next one up...

The Grenadier giant on the right was on display in Rich's living room at both houses he had while I knew him. In the latter, he was on a hill facing a dwarf giant slayer (I should have looked for the dwarf so I could recreate the scene at home!) situated on a table beside the TV/entertainment center. He will obviously have a place of honor in my giant collection. If not for the memories, then possibly as the heaviest model I own! I'll need to find a spot for him in our family room.

I also picked out the second giant, on the left as well. It's based on a Larry Elmore painting, a print of which hung in Rich's game room alongside many others.

One final, totally unrelated item. I picked up this from the local craft store...

The Marienburgers need an airship. The basket will be replaced with a suitably sized armed & armored gondola.

Switching Gears for a Moment

If things go according to plan, I'm going to try out Kill Team this weekend and get to spend some time with some old friends.

Most of my 40k stuff is long gone, and my pirate 'bots don't really fit within the 40k framework, so...

Dusted off my old cultists plus a few half-baked conversions that I'm going to try to finish.

What, no Spaven in Kill Team? OK... let's call them a Cheese-stealer Cult. Mostly shotgun (and a couple of flamer) armed neophyte hybrids, with a couple of Aberrations. That bell? The biggest power hammer you've seen.

Working to tidy up the conversions, not sure they've be 100% painted in time.

Went to the soon to be going out of business (since Michael's bought the chain and then killed them) craft store and spotted these!

I've got some bits that I had (years ago) started trying to pull together into a fantasy airship. I think I'm going to grab a couple of these....

Skrolk, Baggage

Some of us on the Oldhammer in the New World Facebook group did a surprise figure exchange. I painted & sent someone Lord Skrolk.

After many long years, I finally scratch built and bought some containers to put in the wagons & carts. I can't remember if I posted these before, but did these a little while ago.

Photo Background

It's only been... I don't know, 6 months or so since I moved into my art studio, and my figures moved along with me. It's taken that long just to put up a backdrop for photographing figures. What a difference! The puke colored wallpaper really did alter the photos drastically.

Mind you, I still haven't fixed the lighting yet. So these photos are just a change in background...

The dipped Persians from the last photo.

And some Skaven jezzails left over from the sell-off of my Skaven army.

These (Skaven) are still for sale, by the way. I'm going to be posting a list of the remaining few items soon (maybe later tonight.)

Skaven For Sale

Selling. Cash only. Losing my job and having baby on the way are forcing me to sell off some of my gaming collection. Reluctantly. My loss is your gain. Buyer pays shipping and any extras (insurance, etc.)

WFB

Skaven - Painted

Basing note: All bases are magnetized. That's how I travel with my army. Most are basswood with magnetic sheet on the bottom. Figures are either glued straight to the base, or in the case of many of the metal figures, the tabs have been cut and they have been pinned as well. I used white/PVA glue to stick the figures on the base, so if you don't like the basing, they shouldn't be too difficult to remove. Most of the group bases include extra scenic elements like arrows stuck in the ground, rats running among the troops, mushrooms, etc.

90 Plastic Clanrats: $270
These are the previous multi-piece clanrats, with some giant rats mixed in to accomodate the figures ranking up. They are all based on magnetic bases, with a mix of single bases and multi-bases. The multi-bases accomodate a lot of the conversions and "unruly mob" look I was after. Two units of 30 were designed to have the front rank holding large improvised shields (inspired by the historical "shield wall" concept) with the second rank attacking over their heads. These have been used for years, and as anyone who has had these figures can tell you, there will be a sertain amount of snapped tails involved. I've tried to make repairs & repaints where I can. Just understand these are well painted/converted gaming figures, not display pieces. ;)

30 Metal Plague Monks: $100
"Brotherhood of the Red Pox." Mounted on magnetic bases, a mix of single based and multi-based. I traded for the figures, whoever had them before me cut off a few of the second hand weapons for some reason. Hard to notice in the mob. I have added a painted banner to the standard since the first photo was taken.

Pic of the monks with the Furnace, for reference, so you can see the banner. (Furnace sold separately!!)

6 Plage Censor Bearers: $30
Mix of metal and converted plastic figures. Painted to match the "Brotherhood" above.

Plague Furnace: $100
A lot of hard work and... blood went into this. Not sure why I don't have a finished pic of the Furnace, but below are a couple WIP shots without the crew finished, nor the base on two of the photos. The crew & plage priest are painted to match the monks & PCBs above.

Converted Skaven Themed Game Turn Counter! $100
Converted from the old Doomwheel, plus some other bits. Rotate the engineer on his throne so that it points to whatever turn it is. Magnetic base. The standard was painted black with the intention of painting a symbol or a tick mark for every defeated enemy, but I never got around to it. But all the better for you to do it after you buy this unique conversion from me! ;)

Rat Giant! $100
100% Scratch sculpted giant rat critter, accompanied by his Clan Moulder escort on his base. Previously used as a DoW giant in previous editions, I've used this as an Abomination since the latest army book came out. Based on a 50x50 magnetized base. You will need to add a secondary base (I was using a metal base, built up in the front and back) or rebase him to match the new base size. Scupted with a durable mix of epoxy putties on a heavy gauge wire frame.

Old metal Grey Seer on old metal Screaming Bell: $100
One of the centerpieces of my army. It's on the old sized base, so I've been slipping another base under it for games until I got a chance to rebase it. The Seer is has a pin in one foot, that fits into a hole on the top of the bell. Also included is one matching 20x20 infantry base with two holes, so if the bell is destroyed you can remove the Seer and put him on an infantry base.

WFB Core Battles

Some of the old game club got together again for another day of WFB gaming. We played two rounds. The army rules were:

  • 2000 Points
  • No Lords
  • 15% Max. Heroes
  • 20% Max Special
  • No Rare

I drew up two army lists. One for Empire, one for Skaven. I decided to play the Empire list, but when it came time to pack the car, I discovered that the Empire figures were all over the place (some packed in the travel box, some in a cabinet, some out on the desk) and laziness won out. I brought the Skaven. The army looked something like this:

1 Chieftain with heavy armour, shield, warlock augmented weapon
1 Chieftain with battle standard, heavy armour shield, and the magic standard that causes -1 LD to enemies within 12" and units in base contact reroll successful LD tests.
1 Engineer w/ LV1 magic

50 Clanrats with spear & shield
1 PW Mortar
30 Clanrats with shield
1 Warp Fire Thrower
30 Clanrats with shield
1 Warp Fire Thrower
40 Slaves
40 Slaves
30 Monks
6 Rat Ogres + 3 Handlers
2 Swarms
15 Night Runners
1 Warp Grinder

My first game was against a dwarf gunline. It had a bunch of units of 10 dwarfs with either handguns or crossbows, heavy armour and great weapons, three units of 5 miners, each with a drill, a unit of rangers with crossbows, three bolters with engineers, three slayer heroes and a thane.

The dwarfs set up on their back line, with the larger part of the army on a large hill. The slayers and miners were sent out to slow down the advance while everything else got shot up. It largely worked. Most of my Skaven are S3 and it took a ridiculous number of combat rounds to roll just two wounds on each slayer.

The big break for the dwarfs happened when the 50-rat horde, containing both the general and BSB, failed a freak panic test early in the game and spend a couple rounds fleeing, keeping them mostly out of the game.

In the meantime, fire was focused on the unengaged units, whittling them down to numbers too small to be effective by the time they got to combat. It was almost a re-fight of the recent WAB games against Persian and Macedonian missile armies, posted previously.

In the course of the game, I had a pretty freaky dice roll...

Game 2!

Game two was against an Empire army. It was something like:

30 Swordsmen
10 Swordsmen detachment
10 Handgunner detachment
30 Swordsmen
10 Halberdier detachment
10 Handgunner detachment
30 Spearmen
10 Crossbow detachment
10 Crossbow detachment
10 Knights with a Warrior Priest
1 Captain with battle standard
2 Mortars
1 Cannon
1 Engineer

It would be another game of mostly me moving up to contact the enemy. The first turn was brutal, as a couple of mortar rounds dropped my 50-rat horde below half strength. I got my rat ogres into combat with the knights early on, but I rolled horribly, he rolled great, and the result was that I lost combat by a lot and ran away. After a forced pursuit, they turned around, failed a charge and spent a couple turns getting flamed by a fire thrower before blowing a panic test. They rallied at the end, but were effectively removed from the rest of the battle. (At a high cost to me.)

My plan was to stall on one side or the other. I decided on stalling on my right (foreground in the photos) by sending swarms on the far side of the village, and slaves (and the other WFT) "refusing" (I hoped) the flank of the main line. My tunnelers popped up in front of the artillery, but were then charged by the flagellants supporting them from behind. I sent monks over the far hill, but they also got shot to pieces and broke in the second round of combat, after failing to do much of anything in spite of their "buckets o' dice" in combat -- even against mere humans.

The remainder of the horde did win combat in the center, but were then left standing alone just outside of the minimum firing range for the mortars. My only real luck was with a unit of clanrats on my left who made it to combat largely unscathed by missile fire, beat a detachment of crossbowmen, then turned and fought the swordsmen who had defeated my monks. After two rounds of combat, I managed to squeek by with a narrowly won round and lucked out when my opponent failed his break test.

We didn't total points or anything, but looking at the battle, I think it was at best a draw for the Skaven -- and that's being generous. All I had left were a couple units of clanrats. My opponent had lost most of his combat units, but he still had enough shooting to prevent me from turning and charging him effectively. At some point, the knights would be back, as well, though it would probably just be to mop up any remaining rats.

The next games will hopefully be in a couple weeks, and will be Ancients again.
