NGC 4088은 Ursa Major 별자리에 있는 중간 나선 은하다.은하는 NGC 4085와 물리적 쌍을 이루는데, 이 은하는 11인치 떨어진 곳에 위치해 있다.[4]

NGC 4088은 웅장한 디자인의 나선 은하다.[5]은하의 원반에 있는 나선팔이 날카롭게 정의되어 있다는 뜻이다.가시광선에서는 나선팔 중 하나에 분리된 세그먼트가 있는 것으로 보인다.Halton Arp는 이러한 현상이 발생하는 몇 가지 예 중 하나로 이 은하를 특이 은하 아틀라스에 포함시켰다.[6]

NGC 4088과 NGC 4085는 Ursa Major 별자리에 위치한 은하 그룹인 M109 그룹의 구성원이다.이 큰 그룹은 나선 은하 M109를 포함하여 41개에서 58개 사이의 은하를 포함하고 있다.[7][8][9]

2009년 4월 13일 NGC 4088에서 초신성 SN 2009d가 발견되었다.[10]겉보기 등급 13.8로 2009년의 세 번째로 밝은 초신성이 되었다.[10][11]1991년에 SN1991G가 있었다.
