One person died on Saturday morning in Salo, south-west Finland, when a car slipped off a bridge on Vanha Turuntie (the old Turku highway) onto tracks below, where it was hit by a train, says the Finnish Transport Agency’s rail traffic centre. The car was completely destroyed, and one person in it killed. No injuries have been reported on the train.
The accident occurred in the village of Halikko, about six kilometres west of the Salo railway station. It is on the main coastal rail line that connects Helsinki with the port city and former capital Turku in the south-west. All traffic on the line was immediately halted, with some train passengers transferred to busses.
Rescue officials received the alarm shortly after 9 am Saturday. At 10.40, State Railways VR announced that traffic had resumed on the route, but warned of continuing delays.
Three InterCity trains between Helsinki and Turku are running between 20 and 40 minutes late.
