More foreign construction workers

Every fifth housing construction worker in Finland hails from abroad, according to the Confederation of Finnish Construction Industries. In the province of Uusimaa, which includes the capital region, that figure is one in three workers.

Most foreign workers are engaged in subcontracting and temporary work. The confederation estimates that the number of foreign labourers stands at about 30,000 out of the total of 100,000 housing construction workers employed in the sector.

The number of foreign builders will likely increase once the Finnish baby boomer generation goes into retirement.

The confederation says it is concerned about effectively controlling work conditions and tax payments by foreign workers.
