Police have clocked drivers at high speed on both highways and city streets and in many cases, speeds have been double or more the posted limits.
For example, police recently caught a motorcyclist driving in traffic along the motorway between Helsinki and Lahti at 218 km/hour. The speed limit on the stretch of road is 120 km/hour.
The Chief of the National Traffic Police, Kari Rantala, points out that nearly half of all serious traffic accidents involve speeding.
