Travelers Warned of Super Bugs

Many Finns are unwitting carriers of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. According to a Finnish researcher, up to a quarter of people travelling outside Europe could be the carrier of a super bug. For the most part, though, holiday diarrhoea remains the most common holiday ailment.

Swedish research also shows similar findings. One of four Swedish travelers outside Europe contracts intestinal bacteria resistant to antibiotics.

A majority of those infected return home without symptoms. However, in some cases they can develop of severe form of urethra infection which is more difficult than usual to treat.

”Treatment becomes complicated requiring the use of more expensive medicine not always with the desired outcome,” notes Professor Martti Vaara of the University of Helsinki Hospital.

Although the problem is small at present, Vaara believes a growing danger exists.

Experts say superbugs resistant to antibiotics can also be found in southern Europe as well as more far-flung locations. If their spread continues, then many infections currently treatable with antibiotics might become dangerous.

Travelers are advised to avoid the spread of superbugs by means of dietary precautions. Professor Vaara says travelers should avoid, for example, salads and poultry.
