Finns Divided Over Privatisation of Services

Finns are sharply divided over the issue of the privatisation of local municipal services. A survey commissioned by the Sunday supplement of the Väli-Suomi newspaper group and the Central Chamber of Commerce showed 40 percent opposed privatisation, whereas 42 percent were in favour of it.

The privatisation of municipal services is most popular with higher income groups. One out of two people surveyed who earn over 70,000 euros a year would like to see more services turned over to the private sector, while only a quarter of those earning less than 10,000 euros annually are in favour of such a move.

Three-quarters of supporters of the conservative National Coalition Party said that they would back more services provided by private companies. Only one in four Left Alliance supporters shared that view.

The survey, conducted by Taloustutkimus, polled 1,124 participants in late August on their attitudes toward entrepreneurship. Nine out of ten were rather positive or very positive on the issue. Among the reasons given was that entrepreneurs employ themselves and create jobs for others.

This Sunday was National Entrepreneurs Day.
