Berries Blast Fatty Liver

Finnish berries help prevent a dangerous liver condition known as fatty liver. A new study suggests that eating blueberries, lingonberries, blackcurrants and buckthorn berries reduces fat stores in the liver.

Fatty liver disease, the result of a poor diet, is quickly spreading throughout the western world. People with the condition are at risk for developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Lingonberries and blackcurrants have been found to have the most fat-blasting qualities. Henna-Maria Lehtonen, who is presenting a dissertation on the topic in Turku on Friday, says these berries also have other health-boosting benefits that require further research.

Liver fat levels declined when test subjects ate 160 grammes, around three decilitres, of different varieties of domestic berries daily.

Lehtonen says fresh berries deliver the most health benefits, but frozen and dried berries are also effective.
