Copterline Sues Helicopter Manufacturer over 2005 Crash

The Finnish passenger helicopter operator Copterline is suing the helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky for millions of dollars in damages over the fatal crash of one of the aircraft in the Gulf of Finland in 2005.

The newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reports that Copterline is demanding damages in an American court of at least 60 million US dollars, or nearly 46 million euros, for negligence.

Twelve passengers and two crew members were killed in August 2004 when a helicopter en route from the Estonian capital Tallinn to Helsinki crashed into the Gulf of Finland soon after takeoff.

Copterline believes that the accident was caused by a technical fault which rendered the helicopter impossible to steer.
