Vanhanen Satisfied With Stance on Climate

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has said that he's pleased with increasing awareness on the issue of climate change.

In YLE radio interview progreamme, Vanhanen said the reduction of emissions from construction and transportation is particularly important.

He added that Finland is at the forefront of the use of biomass such as timber and wood chips, but the usage of wind turbine power is only just beginning.

He explained that in terms of emissions statistics, Finland is one of the world's big polluters, due in part to the climate and long distances. He added that although the country relies heavily on burning fossil fuels, although it can take advantage of many other energy sources.

He said that a more nature-sensitive approach to energy policy could result in savings using new technology solutions. He added that climate policy should be a global commitment.

The Prime Minister said people should not continue with the current rate of emissions, as it would lead to a catastrophe. He emphasised that emissions must be reduced by the use of new technology.
