Dangerous Bacterial Infection In Western Finland

Senior citizens are falling victim to a dangerous intestinal bacterial infection spreading across hospital districts in western Finland. From November last year just about one hundred severe cases of Clostidium Difficile infection were identified. Roughly ten percent of victims have succumbed to the infection.

The disease has also been detected in the Satakunta region in south western Finland, as well as the Turku University hospital and the city hospital.

Reijo Peltonen, infections diseases specialist for the area said hospitals have started implementing more stringent measures to stem the spread of the infection.

The doctor added that new infections were detected in south west Finland in one day and that the rate of spread of the disease did not appear to be slowing down.

The bacterial infection, which is particularly hazardous to senior citizens, has affected 17 people since the beginning of the year.

Up to the present time, three deaths have been attributed to the disease. Infections have been identified at the in-patient facility of the Rauma health centre and previously at the Tauma district hospital.

The Clostridium Difficile bacterium causes diarrhoea and other intestinal infections, and can be treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

More virulent bacterial strains can result in a life-threatening intestinal infection.
