Clearer Guidelines on Employers' Rights to Credit Information

Clearer guidelines on when an employer can gain access to employees' credit information go into effect on Monday.

According to the amended law, employers can only use the information in special cases, such as when employee credibility is especially important. Personal credit information is particularly useful to employers who want to determine how reliable a new employee is.

Employers must pay for the cost of accessing credit information. They are also required to inform employees where they obtained the information.

Companies providing credit information must also make certain they are following the law before giving employers personal credit information.

A working group from the Ministry of Employment and Economy prepared the changes to the law.
