The 29-year-old Ford Focus driver now leads the overall competition ahead of his French rival.

Hirvonen, who resides in Jyväskylä where the rally Finland is staged, has participated in the event eight times.

Hirvonen's team mate, Jari-Matti Lavala finished third and now stands in fourth position in the World Championships

One side effect of the event was the large number of speeding violations reported by police in the area. Almost 400 would-be rally drivers received fines. Some 25 cases of drink driving were discovered over the weekend by police in the Jyväskylä area.
