Finland Not Extraditing Anton’s Father

Finland will not hand Paavo Salonen over to the Russian authorities for smuggling his son, Anton, out of Russia last spring. The Finnish Foreign Ministry says such an extradition would be against the Finnish constitution. Finland and Russia also lack a bilateral extradition treaty.

A subcommittee of the Russian state prosecutor is demanding that Paavo Salonen answer kidnapping charges, according to the Russian news agency Itar-Tass.

Pasi Tuominen, Director of the Consular Services Section at the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, told YLE that Finland has not received an official extradition request.

On Tuesday, a court in Tampere convicted Rimma Salonen, Anton’s Russian mother, of kidnapping her son in the spring of 2008. She was found guilty of taking Anton to Russia without the permission of the boy's Finnish father. She was handed a suspended sentence of 1.5 years.
