The ship leaves Helsinki on Tuesday, bound for the south of the Bothnian Bay. It will also try to find out if the European Space Agency's Satellite gives an accurate idea of the thickness of sea ice.

Pressure builds up due to the movement of ice, ice floes, and ice thickening over a short period of time. Although it’s not possible to accurately measure the pressure ice exerts, forecasters are able to say where ships might get stuck in the ice.

The ship will carry 22 researchers from the meteorological institute, Aalto University and research institutes in Russia, Japan, Canada and Germany.

The voyage will conclude on 6 March.
