A group of researchers, commissioned by the Swedish government, claimed on Tuesday that the Baltic Sea could be on the eve of its own destruction.
But Matti Perttilä, a director at the Finnish Institute of Marine Research told YLE Radio News, that while some of the claims made by the Swedish group are true, the Baltic Sea is nowhere near destruction.
He said that the ever-increasing amount of nutrients in the Baltic Sea are a cause for worry, but the situation is much worse in the Mediterranean, for instance, where emissions are threatening the sea's ecosystem.
The Swedish researchers said it is no longer enough to gradually cut emissions and water-borne pollutants. The study suggests that oxygen depletion and ever-increasing nutrients have created a vicious circle which is choking the sea.
The researchers say that emissions from agriculture and industry must be cut to the levels of a century ago so there is any hope of the sea being revived.
