Greek Police Probe Diplomat's Car Blast

Greek police are investigating three explosions in downtown Athens early Tuesday that destroyed several cars, including one belonging to a Finnish diplomat, consul Leena Vuorio.

The small apartment building where she lived was also damaged by the ensuing fire. Vuorio's flat is uninhabitable.

Vuorio was awakened after 3 a.m. when her car exploded and caught fire.

Another bomb damaged a local office of the governing Conservative Party. No injuries were reported.

Finland's Ambassador to Greece, Ole Norrback, says Greek police do not believe that the bombers intended to target Finland or Finns specifically. However he says they may have chosen the car since it had diplomatic license plates.

Norrback said that this was probably a random act of violence committed by anarchists, who have committed similar attacks in the past. An anonymous caller to a TV station said that a previously-unknown Greek anarchist group was responsible for the blasts.
