Local Anti-Uranium Petition Moving Ahead

Residents of the municipality of Eno, in North Karelia, have started gathering names on a petition aimed at blocking mining claims by uranium prospectors.

Over the weekend, the petition was signed by nearly 200 residents living near an area included in a tract where mining companies have filed applications for claims.

The petition is addressed to the Ministry of Trade and Industry that is presently reviewing the applications.

Two companies have applications under review, the French Cogema and the British Agricola Resources.

A fast rise in uranium prices on world markets has aroused interest among a number of companies in deposits in Finland. A decision on the applications will be forthcoming from the ministry by this autumn.

Actual uranium mining activities, however, will require approval by the cabinet.
