Record Number of Farms Going Organic

A record number of Finnish farms have begun shifting to organic production this year. Hundreds of farms are doing so, the largest increase since Finland joined the EU 14 years ago.

The influx of new organic producers will lead to a drop in prices for organic grains three years from now, when the new wave of farmers can begin selling their crops with the organic label after a transitional period.

For instance, in the southern town of Tuusula, five farmers have gone organic so far this year.

One of them, Jouko Aalto, told YLE he was surprised to hear that about the future price decline. However he is not worried, saying that if even if there is a glut on the domestic market, his grain can probably be exported.
