The treaty was approved by the UN General Assembly in April, and will be signed on Monday. Finland was one of the drivers behind the agreement, along with Australia, Argentina, Costa Rica, the United Kingdom, Japan and Kenya.
The goal is to regulate the global trade in small arms and prevent illegal arms trading. It is the first attempt at regulating the conventional weapons trade and includes provisions for bans on arms sales to human rights violators.
Some 60 countries will sign the treaty at the ceremony in New York. The agreement comes into force when 50 countries have ratified it. Finland has already started the ratification process.
