South enjoys Indian summer Sunday

Residents of many parts of southern Finland enjoyed clear sunny skies and plus-20-degree temperatures Sunday. However the balmy conditions will quickly give way to cooler conditions at the start of the week.

Sunday’s highest mercury reading was recorded on Espoo at 23.7 degrees Celsius. Other parts of Finland also basked in plus-20-degree weather during the afternoon.

Finnish meteorologists start talking about a heat wave when temperatures consistently exceed 25.1 degrees. While Sunday’s temperature spike was not in this category, it was above the long term average and even in the north highs topped 15 degrees Celsius.

The weekend’s Indian summer will be short-lived however, as cooler are currents will begin circulating from the east. Although nighttime lows could plunge to sub-zero readings, daytime temperatures will still occasionally vary between 15 degrees in the north and 22 degrees in the southwest.
