Many residents of Finland will join environmental activists across the globe in observing Earth Hour Saturday evening.
The WWF is calling on individuals and organisations to turn off lights and log out of social media channels for one hour, starting at 8.30 pm. The aim is to highlight growing concerns about climate change.
National broadcaster Yle will participate in the campaign by turning off the lights on its well-known broadcast link tower in Pasila – however the tower’s flight warning lights will remain lit for safety reasons.
The lights are also expected to go off in other landmarks such as Tampere's Näsinneula observation tower, Helsinki's Finlandia Hall, and the Helsinki Cathedral. The Office of the President, state gambling monopoly Veikkaus, national mail company Posti and national airline Finnair have also signed up to participate in the hour-long blackout event.
Apart from Helsinki, other participating cities include Oulu, Porvoo, Hanko, Kotka, Tampere, Vantaa, Jyv'skylä, Järvenpää and Turku.
This year’s Earth Hour event also aims to draw attention to the carbon dioxide emissions related to food production. According to the WWF food production is responsible for one-fifth of the carbon emissions created by humans.
