Helsinki residents and visitors have gathered in Senate Square every New Year since 1932, and the latest party was no exception.

Organisers of the latest New Year celebrations said they had to close off access from one corner of the square as people arrived to watch musical performances and a firework display.

The family-focused event passed off peacefully, with the only slight hitch coming when mobile phone networks buckled under the strain of thousands of party-goers sending New Year greetings.
