Immigration records show nearly 9,500 applications for Finnish citizenship were approved last year. Close to 8,500 acquired citizen's status by application while another 792 became Finns by declaration.

The declaration pathway caters to former Finnish citizens, young people between the ages of 18 and 22 who have spent most of their lives in the country and to children born out of wedlock to a Finnish father.

According to the Finnish Immigration Service applications for Finnish citizenship increased by 10 percent in 2013 over the previous year, while citizenship declarations declined by a few dozen.

The majority of former Finnish nationals reclaiming citizenship were Swedish, Australian and American.
