According to the Finnish commercial broadcaster MTV, the National Bureau of Investigation NBI is investigating the case as aggravated extortion.
MTV said that the alleged shakedown occurred between 2007 and 2008, and that the extortionist threatened to reveal an encryption key to Nokia’s Symbian mobile phone source code unless the funds were paid.
NBI Detective Chief Inspector Tero Haapala confirmed to MTV that the case remains open. He added that the sum wrung out of the company was considerable.
However police would not comment on whether or not the offender was a Finn, or whether or not more than one person was involved.
Nokia has declined comment on the matter.
