Postal strike to leave papers undelivered

The postal strike set to begin at 4pm on Thursday is likely to have wide-ranging effects on deliveries of letters, parcels and newspapers—particularly in the Turku and Helsinki regions.

A postal workers’ strike set to begin on Thursday afternoon will have far-reaching effects on deliveries, especially in the south. In Helsinki, letters and parcels—as well as morning newspapers—will not be delivered on Friday.

"It won’t help even if you take your letter or parcel to the post office in the morning, as the collections are only made after 4pm in the afternoon and at that point the sorting offices will already be closed," said Posti’s Jarmo Ainasoja.

Turku will also see deliveries delayed in the first stage of the strike.

Elsewhere in Finland morning newspapers will be delivered as normal. Post and parcels between southern Finland and the rest of the country will however be delayed, as large sorting offices in the Helsinki and Turku regions will be closed.

"It’s likely that packages sent from anywhere in southern Finland will be delayed by the strike, as the parcel will most likely pass through one of the sorting offices in Vantaa or Lieto," said Ainasoja.

Posti will however make a special effort to deliver post related to healthcare or security.

"In reality it’s difficult to find letters about hospital appointments among millions of letters, but lab results we can recognize and get to their destinations," said Ainasoja.
