Hot and cold: Nighttime temperatures dip below freezing in northern and central areas

The past week's heatwave turned frosty overnight in the north and some central parts of the country when the thermometer dipped low to as low as -1.7C in Lapland.

Overnight readings at Ylivieska in North Ostrobothnia dipped to -0.2C and at Juuka in North Karelia to -0.1C. Temperatures were low as far south as in South Karelia, where a reading of +0.2C was recorded at Konnunsuo.

Night-time temperatures plummeted in northern and central regions. 

It was even colder in the far north, with the night's lowest temperature, -1.7C recorded at Salla.

Sub-zero temperatures during the summer months are not unheard of, but they are rare, according to Yle Meteorologist Matti Huutonen.

Rains coming

Monday dawned sunny and mostly fair across most of the country, but with some rain clouds moving into western Lapland.

Skies are forecast to become increasingly cloudy nationwide during the day, beginning in the west, bring rains Monday evening and Tuesday to southern and central areas.
