Fire bomb incident in Kouvola – emergency housing unit chief says workers unafraid

The director of the Kouvola asylum-seekers' emergency housing unit says there is no need to react with fear to the Molotov cocktail attack on the centre on Thursday, although a reassessment of their security is underway. The employees continue to discuss the incident with the migrants living at the housing unit.

The asylum-seekers' emergency housing unit in Keltakangas in Kouvola will be reassessing its security protocols following an attack by a 50-year-old man, who threw a burning Molotov cocktail at the centre on Thursday. Unit director Satu Kurri says she considers the strike a one-time incident.

"We will continue our work with our minds at ease and hope that no more incidents occur," she says. "It's perfectly safe to keep working here."

The explosive attack has been the subject of composed discussion among the asylum-seekers and the unit's employees. Kurri says that especially the women and children residing at the makeshift centre found the incident frightening.

"The men said they considered it a nasty thing, but that they've been through worse in their own countries," she says.

The residents of the housing unit were assembled immediately after the fire from the homemade bomb had been extinguished. An information session will be organised for those working and living in the Keltakangas unit on Friday.

Kurri says that overreactions to the current crisis and its incidents should be avoided, and that she and her staff are all reachable if residents fear for their safety.
