More than 12,000 begin military service

Over 12,000 male conscripts will join the armed forces from Monday as they begin a stint of compulsory military service. They will be joined by 300 female volunteers.

The majority of the recruits – roughly 10,000 – will be deployed in the Finnish Army. Another 1,500 will go to the Finnish Navy, while the rest will be distributed among units of the Border Guard and Air Force.

Swedish-speaking recruits will mostly serve in the Uusimaa brigade. However the majority of conscripts will be placed in brigades in Pori, Kainuu and Karelia.

Military service essentially consists of a series of training periods. It begins with a basic training period of seven weeks, after which it will continue to meet the programme's main goal of ensuring that participants acquire a grasp of wartime skills and missions.
