Nicholas Collon & Elina Vähälä
Magnus Lindberg read Beethoven’s conversation notebooks and engaged in dialogue with his older colleague by writing Absence for an orchestra of Beethoven’s era. The carefully chosen quotations and the steep contrasts serve as further reminders of the German master.
His tenth symphony has been interpreted as Dmitry Shostakovich’s comment on the Stalin regime just ended. Benjamin Britten’s resolute violin concerto reflects the great tragedies taking place when it was written – the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.
