Jena Bedson on Instagram: "I’m feeling a wee bit excited about my new “Jewels of the Sea” series. I’ve been working on this series for about 6 mths (in my head) and it’s finally manifested in my “Sweet Lips” fishies, and now the jewel in the crown, the whale. All these pieces will be parts of Totems. I made some whales last year but wasn’t happy with them and put them on hold. The idea however just kept tickling me until I was ready to try again. I sometimes have an idea for a piece that is incredibly persistent and won’t leave me alone ….it niggles me until I give it a go. The idea isn’t always successful right away and can sometimes take several attempts before I’m satisfied. Do you find this in your studio practice? Do you persevere with an idea even if your first attempts fail? I’m working on a new range of Layered Clay Vessels and I’m feeling pretty excited about the direction the designs are heading. In my online workshops I often refer to the term “finding freedom within a framework”. This to me sums up my teaching method. I use projects in order to pass on the skills and techniques I’ve learned over the last 40yrs as a full time Ceramic Artist. Through projects we can make practical sense of the skills and techniques that are required to make pottery into the future. The projects also allow my students to not only become competent with technique but to find freedom of expression and discover their own unique voice through clay.
