The Ball and Chain are recurring Objects and Items in The Legend of Zelda series.[1]

Location and Uses

The Adventure of Link

Chain Hammers are used by on enemy type, Guma and a boss character, Gooma. Gumas toss Chain Hammers in an upwards arc, whilst Gooma swings its Chain Hammer directly at arc.

Chain Hammers cannot be blocked by Link's Magic Shield, though the Guma's chain hammers can be blocked if the spell, Reflect is cast.

Twilight Princess

The Ball and Chain is located in one of the northernmost rooms of Snowpeak Ruins, where the Middle Boss Darkhammer is found. Darkhammer uses the Ball and Chain as its main Weapon, and once defeated, Link can pick it up and add it to the Item Screen.

The Ball and Chain can be thrown to inflict heavy damage on Enemies, break through Ice and Rocks, and burn Cobwebs.[note 1] Link can also swing it to damage any Enemy around him. Some Enemies, such as Stalfos, can be defeated with a single hit of the Ball and Chain. Once thrown, Link will pull the Ball and Chain back to him, causing damage to any enemy it touches on its return path. Enemies like ReDeads and Chilfos can be defeated in one throw this way. The Ball and Chain is the only weapon aside from Cannons that can defeat Freezards.

When Link holds the Ball and Chain in his hands, it can be used to deflect incoming projectiles, such as Chilfos' Ice spears, as well as avoid being blown away by the City in the Sky's strong winds. However, due to the weight of the Item, Link moves considerably slower while holding it.

The Ball and Chain can be upgraded through Adventure Mode to a golden ball with additional spikes and to a Chain Chomp.
