In Ocarina of Time, Shiro is a minor construction worker.

Majora's Mask

Shiro is a Soldier who is encountered in Ikana Canyon. He is so plain and boring that, even though he constantly waves his arms around, he is unnoticeable and invisible.[4] Link can find the injured Soldier while using the Lens of Truth.[5] After being healed with a Red or Blue Potion, he gives Link the Stone Mask.[6][7]

In Majora's Mask 3D, he is instead found in the center of the Pirates' Fortress next to its lookout tower, which he infiltrated in an attempt to stand out.[8] Tatl senses his presence when nearby, and alerts Link.[9] After assisting him in the same manner as in the original game, he runs out of the fortress through the nearest doorway. He can then be found on the ledge above the area with the Pirates on boats at a loss on how to proceed.[10] When spoken to, he will reassure Link that he does not need further help.[11]

Trivia

  • In the Japanese versions of Majora's Mask and Majora's Mask 3D, Shiro is the only character who is referred to with "Kun" honorific in Bombers' Notebook,[12][13] whilst most of others are referred to with a less friendly and more respectful "San" honorific.

Nomenclature

Shiro is a romanization of his Japanese names, シロー (Shirō) and シロウ (Shirō),[note 1] the same name with different spellings. It is a Japanese male given name that consists of any kanji that reads as "し/シ (Shi)" and the "郎/朗 (Rō)" suffix.[14] The name is one of haikoumei, a type of male given name that represents the birth order of the child. Shiro is traditionally given to fourth-born sons, as it is associated with to the letter "四Shi (four)".

In Ocarina of Time, the "Shi" is likely spelled as 四Shi (four) in kanji, as the names of the four Carpenters are typical haikoumei. In Majora's Mask, the name may be derived from the word 石ころ (Ishikoropebble).[15]
