Zubaan’s academic list focuses on History, Conflict Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Health and Development. The backlist includes such classic studies as Radha Kumar’s History of Doing, while the vibrant frontlist tackles cutting edge issues such as assisted reproductive technologies, sex selection, gender and caste-based violence, and queer theory. Institutes of higher education, libraries and researchers have all come to know and rely on Zubaan’s list as the first stop for anyone interested in women’s issues in South Asia.
Spearheading the fiction list are such internationally renowned authors as Suniti Namjoshi, Jaishree Mishra, Manjula Padmanabhan and Annie Zaidi. In Zubaan, translations have always been a very important part of our work, with over 34 books from ten different languages. The Zubaan fiction list is a vibrant mix of short stories and novels, of well-known authors and brilliant new voices, works of serious literature and experimental new forms. It pioneered and continues to be the leading publisher of women’s writing from the Northeast.
Since its inception, Zubaan has held the Northeastern states of India to be of particular interest and importance. We have published many of the leading writers from this part of the country, many translated into English for the first time. Alongside short stories and novels, the list also includes academic and non-fiction works dealing with the years of conflict and its aftermath. Authors include: Temsula Ao, Easterine Kire, Indira Goswami, Anjum Hasan, Mitra Phukan and many others.
Nonfiction for the trade market is a small but growing part of Zubaan’s list. Memoirs, such as the bestselling A Life Less Ordinary by Baby Halder, have established the list as one of the most highly respected in the world. Alongside memoirs and histories, books of general interest – such as Nivedita Menon’s Seeing Like a Feminist – have been well received nationally and internationally.
Publishing non-sexist, inclusive and diverse books for children and young adults, Young Zubaan has established itself as a key imprint in the Indian market. From picture books for smaller kids, to chapter books for middle-grade readers and cutting edge fiction for young adults, you know when you pick up a Young Zubaan book that you’re in for something a little bit different. Contemporary, well-designed, brilliantly written and imaginative, YZ books marry a modern Indian sensibility with international standards of production.
In 2005 Zubaan entered into a new and unusual partnership with the publishing giant, Penguin India. Both organizations agreed to publish a joint list of at least four titles a year. Zubaan originates the books, develops them, does the editorial work, while the print production, marketing and sales are done by Penguin. Some of the titles that have been published in this collaboration are: Kunzang Choden’s The Circle of Karma, Baby Halder’s A Life Less Ordinary and Nivedita Menon’s Seeing Like a Feminist.
