Break it Slow © Abbie Gardner, Gimmie Some Ribs Music (ASCAP) If you break my heart, won't you break it slow I can't stand the thought that you'd ever go If you break my heart baby, please break it slow Give me some time, time to watch you go Don't you re-member how we fell in love Took our time, no there wasn’t any rush Don't you remember how we fell in love? Took our sweet time, no we didn't need to rush Well, I like the motion of an old freight train Those rails are sweeter than sugar cane I like the motion of an old freight train Those rails can rock me like nothing I could ever explain I won't try to stop you, if you've made up your mind Just take it easy, when you say goodbye If you break my heart, won't you break it slow I can't stand the thought that you'd ever go If you break my heart baby, please break it slow Give me some time, time to watch you go If you break my heart, won't you break it slow

Liar 03:30
Liar © Abbie Gardner, Gimmie Some Ribs Music (ASCAP) It I was a liar, this is when I would lie swear I don’t love you, not a tear in my eye but I can’t lie, no, not to you I ain’t no liar it’s true If I was a drinker, this is when I would drink get rid of your memory, like I was draining a sink It’d go down so easy, instead of so damn hard and losing you wouldn’t tear me apart But I ain’t no drunk, I wish I was I got no luck, when it comes to love You’re probably out there, loving someone new and here I am, just a fool No, I ain’t no drunk, I wish I was I got no luck, when it comes to love You’re probably out there, loving someone new and here I am, just a fool Tryin' to be good makes me bad at this part I got a stubborn, tender little heart I can’t deny it, I’m still in love with you I ain’t no liar, it’s true... I’m stone cold sober, and I just can’t get over you

Comes Love 03:08
Comes Love © Tobias, Brown & Stept - Chappell & Co, WB Music Corp Comes a rainstorm, put your rubbers on your feet Comes a snowstorm, you can get a little heat Comes love, nothing can be done Comes a fire, then you know just what to do Blow a tire, you can buy another shoe Comes love, nothing can be done Don't try hiding 'Cause there isn't any use You'll start sliding When your heart turns on the juice Comes a headache, you can lose it in a day Comes a toothache, see your dentist right away Comes love, nothing can be done

I Can’t Be Good for You © Abbie Gardner, Gimmie Some Ribs Music (ASCAP) I know you think I’m heartless and sometimes love can be cruel but I must deny, The tears in my eyes Cause I can’t be good for you You belong to her darlin’ And she wants you right by her side So who am I, to take what’s not mine No I can’t be good for you So go on, go on and forget me Yeah we both know you can and you will you’ll be okay, while I pine away Cause I can’t be good for you I will swear that I never loved you I will swear I must go on alone If you believe all my lies, you’ll have sunnier skies Cause I can’t be good for you So go on, go on and forget me Yeah we both know you can and you will you’ll be okay, while I pine away Cause I can’t be good... No I can’t be good… I can’t be good for you

Hope 04:41
Hope © Abbie Gardner, Gimmie Some Ribs Music (ASCAP) My hope is a two-timing thief in the night Making deals with people I should run from Please don’t give him money, or let him call you honey Cause he’ll love you and then leave you lonesome My hope is a floozy, she's drunk and unruly Dancing up on top of the bar She falls like a hammer, and glasses that shatter Like broken little pieces of stars I can't stop, I can't choose, I love, I lose Clear my head, clear my sight, it's a curse it's a fight Got no cause to believe, but my hope just won't leave I know I can't win, I give up.... I give in... Oh but fear thunders closer, he’s an angry composer, armed with a thousand violins. Yeah he drowns out the sound of what I thought I’d found And I’m a fool cause I believe again I can't stop, I can't choose, I love, I lose Clear my head, clear my sight, it's a curse it's a fight Got no cause to believe, but my hope just won't leave I know I can't win, I give up.... I give in...

It's You 03:14
It’s You © Abbie Gardner, Gimmie Some Ribs Music (ASCAP) I study your face over coffee all your scratches cracked and worn but you're perfect to me and I couldn't ask for anything more Clouds in my head just burn away, Do, do, do, do do do do With anything you ever say I get sentimental, when they call your name You are soft and gentle, need you in my arms again cause It's you it's always you, do do do do do do It's you it's always you Love is messy sad and tangled and sometimes everything unravels But something about the way you shine Makes me think it'll be alright When you speak I feel the sun, Do, do, do, do do do do Cause you're my only only one Friends may come and go, but you'll still be with me Forget the mistletoe, cause you're the whole damn christmas tree It's you it's always you, Do, do, do, do do do do It's you it's always you, Do do do do do It's you it's always you, Do, do, do, do do do do It's you it's always you. Always you…

Nellie 03:02
Nellie © Abbie Gardner, Gimmie Some Ribs Music (ASCAP) Oh Nellie won’t you wake up, wake up, put on your shoes This time it’s worse he’ll add red to black and blue Quiet now girl, don’t you say another word He’s been hard at that bottle, and there’s no telling what he’s heard Oh Nellie, I’ll stand between The man you fear and what sets you free No moon tonight so he won’t see Just run run run run... And don’t look behind for me… The chains that keep you, are made of doubt and fear You think you done wrong and somehow you deserve to be here But I been saving up, for us to get away, I knew our chance would come, one of these days You hold the money and we’ll wait til he’s still Oh Nellie, I’ll stand between The man you fear and what sets you free No moon tonight so he won’t see Just run run run run... And don’t look behind for me… I don’t blame you girl, you always did forget About little things like the creak in that top step Yeah he come stumbling, just fast enough To make me fall, but if it had to be one of us Oh Nellie, I’ll stand between The man you fear and what sets you free No moon tonight so he won’t see Just run run run run, run run run run, run run run run

Walkin' Cane 03:35
Walkin’ Cane Traditional with additional lyrics by Abbie Gardner & Pat Wictor (ASCAP) By that early morning light They gonna come to set things right Ain't no secret what I’ve done and I know it's wrong to run But my sins have overtaken me Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane I'm gonna leave on the midnight train but my sins have overtaken me Let me roam the earth alone When I die, I’ll come home Yeah but I won’t get to stay I'll go down on judgement day My sins have overtaken me Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane I'm gonna leave on the midnight train but my sins have overtaken me Hell is deep and hell is wide There ain't no hurry to arrive, My soul is out on bail and the devil runs my jail My sins have overtaken me Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane Hand me down my walking cane I'm gonna leave on the midnight train but my sins have overtaken me

Too Soon 03:24
Too Soon (for Karena) © Abbie Gardner, Gimmie Some Ribs Music (ASCAP) I heard a low, moaning sound like a freight train shook the ground as he carried, my darling, back home Too soon, too soon she was taken too soon Taken from this world, too soon I begged the stars for one more day but the angels had their way as they carried my darling, back home Too soon, too soon she was taken too soon Taken from this world, too soon Too soon, too soon she was taken too soon Taken from this world, too soon Taken from me, too soon

about

Let's dig back into Abbie's catalog for her album named Hope. Originally released on April 1, 2011, this was the first time Abbie stepped out of the shadow of Red Molly to record more of her original songs. The CD features her versatile voice backed by 3 types of slide guitar (dobro, lap steel, and National bottleneck) and a band comprised of not only her father, Herb Gardner (piano), but also her sister, Sarah Gardner, on organ. Ben Wittman (the drummer on Red Molly's James CD) locks in with upright bassist Craig Akin, who is featured on the first instrumental Abbie has ever recorded (a bass and dobro duet). The songs range from heartache to hope, from gritty lap steel to singing cellos, courtesy of Emily Hope Price. Folk sweetheart Robby Hecht lends his voice to three tracks and fellow member of Red Molly, Laurie MacAllister, is heard throughout. Longtime friends and collaborators Fred Gillen, Jr. and Beaucoup Blue also lend their voices.

"I feel like the songs revolve around Hope, both the song and the idea. Rather than having all hopeful songs, this CD reflects the glimmer of hope we all look for when in the midst of darkness."- Abbie Gardner

"Abbie Gardner shows her prodigious writing chops in her album, Hope. Tales of love and loss, both gritty and sweet, ride the back of her by-now familiar, formidable slide guitar licks. She channels Lucinda and Bonnie, but remains pure Abbie."
— Richard Cuccaro, Publisher, Acoustic Live

"Abbie Gardner gives the grit to Red Molly with her Dobro playing. On her solo CD we get to hear not only her instrumental and songwriting prowess, but her marvelously versatile voice, which can convey pain or playfulness or pure bad girl blues power."
-John Platt, WFUV
