Monday's Long Song

Today's long song arrived a few days ago and I was surprised to listen to something new by Róisin Murphy. To be honest it is not a new song - it is the live version of a collaboration she did with producers Luca C and Brigante 10 years ago. While Flash Of Light was originally was a good dancefloor song in the tradition of Moloko this version is a powerful excursion in house-proved rhythms with jazzy effects on a very solid rhythm base. I was lucky enough to see this version live later this year on a fantastic concert by her band. For me a good start into another working week.

2020: The Songs

This year is almost gone and looking back on it I have say it was a horrible one. Covid-19 changed our lives completely and I suppose the life after the pandemic won't be the same any more. The virus changed the way we met, the way we work and the public life at all. Incompetent leaders and governments made the wrong decisions or ignored the risk. I can fill the list with much more but I will stop now. One of the things that made life easier was music. Retrospective I can say that it was a good year for music. The main thing this year was the day Andrew Weatherall passed away. He was the one that gave us new music - always one step ahead of us all. A year ends list could be filled nearly with of his songs and mixes. But this was already made by others from us. So I decided to make a list based on a playlist I made on Spotify for new songs that was released in 2020. This is not an ultimate list because I find almost everyday new songs from this year that will be saved on this playlist. Also the songs are with any ranking. So let's start.

Taste Good With The Money

Fat White Family released a the second song from their upcoming album the resent days. The song goes back to the known sound of the band, offers propelling and playful, still restained psychic sound. The video was directed by Roisin Murphy and ends with spoken words by Baxter Dury at the end. In that clip a high class garden party moves into a splatter movie and it was intended that one must think immediately of Monty Python. Roisin Murphy explains her intention in own words:

For me there’s such a charm about them and an authenticity that’s actually incredibly rare. I knew I could not possibly work with a more magnetic bunch of performers. The idea of referencing Monty Python partly came out of the somewhat absurd and confusing political landscape that we are now living in Britain, Python seems prescient. The British laughing at themselves, a certain kind glee even in the loss of empire, singing as the ship goes down, well it just seems so... of the moment.
There is this deep ambivalence to the establishment that resonates with the Fat Whites own irreverent world view. Most of all I wanted an idea that would give them the confidence and the space to really let go and just perform, too allow them to be raw in what is essentially an unnatural situation for a bunch of ne’er do well musicians.

Gone Fishing

During the recent days I often listen to Roisin Murphy's latest release 'Hairless Toys' and more and more I get fascinated by this record. There is a review in The Guardian that says exactly what I want to write. So I'm looking forward to see her live in two weeks on a three-day festival I will visit with my youngest brother.

Exploitation

I listened a lot electronic music the recent days and still astonished how many great songs you could find in this genre. One of them is the latest release of Roisin Murphy. Some will remind her as the voice of Moloko back in 1995. A subdued, dark song, a sad, completely unobstrusive song which shines in a maltreated soul. On the sound of a discreet housebeat and in between some Spanish guitars the song gets it's flow. Always done by the miraculous voice of Roisin. Great.
