The Flag Day

Date:
The Flag Day

On 3rd November of every year since 2013, Emirati people celebrate it as a flag day. This day was chosen by HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashed, the ruler of Dubai, as a celebration of the succession of late president HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed in 2004.

At exactly, 11:00 O’clock on 3rd November, all companies, government entities, schools, etc., across the UAE will pay attribute to the flag that represents the unity of the nation and gives the motivation to keep on the great development and progress.

The Emirati flag holds a special place in Emirati’s hearts due to its symbolism. The flag represents UAE, and its people, so it should be respected and presented in a certain way.

The government has regulated certain rules on how to fly the flag. There are differences between long-term flag flying and short-term.

In general, the flag owner should keep an eye on the colour and the overall appearance of the flag, and it should maintain a perfect look all the time. Every six months, the flag should be replaced.

The height of the flag should be half its width, and the colours should always be presented in the correct order. There should not be any other flag or banner higher than the UAE flag.

So, what happens on Flag Day?

The flag should be placed on schools, government places, embassies, and companies. During the celebration of the flag raising at 11:00 O’clock, the national anthem should also be played.

Why does the flag hold a special place in Emirati hearts?

Besides being a representation of unity, the flag design is special. The designer is Abdullah Al Maainah, who entered a competition for UAE flag creation and won after competing against over 1000 designs.

What made this flag unique is the representation of each colour which represents meaning derived from a poem for  Al Hali.

So how is the UAE flag designed and what do its colours represent?

The UAE flag contains four colours, in which three of which appear horizontally next to each other and the fourth colour stands vertically.

Each colour represents a virtue or a value. Red represents courage, green hope, black strength, and white honesty.  However, the flag as a whole represents Arab unity.

Flag Day is not a public holiday, but it is indeed a respected national day. So, enjoy the celebration of this day while shining in beautiful gold earrings, a gemstone set or a diamond bracelet.
