Finishing UFO's

Yay!! This is now a top - with a back, ready for a quilter to get to work on it!!

Remember Ty Pennington? Remember that he got into fabrics? Well - all but the teal are a part of his fabric line - I am not sure how long ago that was - but I am glad to have found a way to use them

April Scrappy Block

I hope you have been enjoying the scrappy blocks for the last few months.   I still have more scraps, and every time I turn my back on the little boxes - they explode!!!

This month we are back to the 2 ½ inch strips!

Method  1:

The easiest way to construct this block is to use width of Fabric strips,

 For this sample I pulled 1 red 2 ½ x 41 inch, and 1 white 2 ½ x 41 in white strip.

Stitch the strips together, press, and then sub-cut into 4 set of 10 inch pieces.

Then you stitch the 10 inch pieced into a strata – and that is your block. 

It should measure 10 inches by 16 inches

Method 2:

Pull 4 - 2 ½ x 10 inch dark strips, and 4- 2 ½ x 10 in light strips and stitch together.

This is the quilt that I made with these blocks – It measures 58 ½ by 80 inches 

Ta - da - that is such a fun way to use up your strips!  and of course you could use a jelly roll, or yardage if you didn't have scrappy strips!!

March 2016 Scrappy Block

So for March - hopefully you can clear out that 2 1/2 inch strip drawer and start in on some 1 1/2 inch strips.    I don't know about you - but every-time I think I am ready to see the bottom - more strips appear!!!


I use this block as part of a scrappy rail fence.  In this example I did them in the same layout - but!  If you go to the bottom of the page - you can see where one is Very scrappy - and not in any order - very randon

This block will measure 8 1/2 inched by 8 1/2 inches

So for this block you need:
(3)   2 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch pieces
(2)   1 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch pieces

Unless you are doing a random placement - lay them out like above.

and the stitch the rows together.

Because you will be laying them out like a rail fence - it really doesn't matter which way you press.

If you have longer strips  you can create strip sets like below, and then just cut them into 8 1/2 inch blocks

None of the blocks were exactly the same and I mixed up the placement of the strips - 

For each block though - you will notice there are (2) 1 1/2 inch white and (3) 2 1/2 inch wide pieced

February 2016 Scrappy Block of the month

Hopefully you all enjoyed the January Block and reduced a few scraps?  The direct link can now be found under the Free Patterns Tab above.

Ready for February?

We are again working with our 2 ½ inch strips – so pull some lights and darks and here we go:

Light                                                                                                     

1 - 2 ½ x 2 ½ inch square

1 - 2 ½ x 4 ½

1 - 2 ½ x 6 ½

1 - 2 ½ x 8 ½

1 - 2 ½ x 10 ½

Darks

Color # 1  (in this ex : Blue)

1 – 2 ½ x 2 ½ inch square

1 – 2 ½ x 4 ½

1 – 2 ½ x 10 1/2

1 – 2 ½ x 12 ½

Color #2  ( in this ex: Red)

1 – 2 ½ x 6 ½

1 – 2 ½ x 8 ½

I cut 5 at a time and stitched them together like a traditional Log cabin – starting with the white 2 ½ sq and the Blue 2 ½ square. Then Ironed to the dark and added the 2 ½ x 4 ½ Blue.

Continue adding your pieces until your block is 12 ½ inch square as below:

Enjoy!!!  And hope you are using some of those 2 ½ inch scraps!!!

This will work for more color schemes of course - a while ago we did some in Yellow and Blues - I have done them in Grey and Black - just whatever scraps I had hanging around -

January 2016 Scrappy Block

You might all remember that I am the Coordinator for QOV in Colorado. The group I stitch with (ok,  ME!!) really wants to use up our scraps and get more quilts made. So Each month I will introduce a scrappy block.  If you want to join in with us and stitch away - I would love it!  

If you only want to make a few blocks and join in with us - we welcome that too!!  

here is January's Block:

January 2016  QOV Scrappy Block

Pull out your 2 ½ inch Strip Scraps – and let’s Dig in!

For this Block you will need 6 – 2 ½ x 6 ½ inch strips and 3 – 2 ½ x 12 ½ inch strips

Stitch the 2 ½ x 6 ½ inch strips into 2 sets of 3. Stitch the 2 ½ x 12 ½ inch strips into 1 set of 3

The two layouts are below – Choose which one you like. Stitch your 6 ½ inch units together – then stitch to the 12 ½ inch units!  And you have a 12 ½ inch x 12 ½ inch block~!
