A while ago, I made a Giants team for a Blood Bowl Secret League Tournament. Instead of four individual giants as my positional players, I decided to make it look like one enormous giant playing on the field as four separate players.
They work really well, and got me a Most Creative Team award.
Now, I have returned to update a new faction with the same concept. Introducing: the Son of Behemat.
Four 130mm-based giants, perfect for most games of Age of Sigmar. A mate 3d printed the hands and feet on his new machine, and the rest was up to me. It was lots of fun.

Painted some test goblins for a swamp/forest goblin army idea I had about a thousand years ago. Trying to go for a grey skin like Lone Wolf Giaks in the chap on the left (right from the rear) because we’re all a bit tired of generic green goblins, right?
Not sure which is actually working better. Can’t tell if I the green is better or is just more what I expected.
Oh, and if you don’t know what a Giak is, here’s an image from the Lone Wolf: Battle for Magnamund kickstarter.
I finally stopped procrastinating from doing all these transfers I need to do, only for it to not work… very well. I think I need to invest in some Micro Sol™ or whatever its called instead of using Tap Water™. But don’t fret, I didn’t spend my time painting more space marines or anything. Instead, my girlfriend and I sat down and knocked out some draft banner ideas!
At the moment, this is looking like the one. Not sure how well it’ll scale down to 30mm or so tall, so we’ll see.
One alternative is to just have the initials ‘DL’ in the corner, kind of like the Chi Rho of early Christian iconography. This also looks great, but I think I’m sold on the full text above.
Look at this dumb font we found, isn’t it ridiculous?
[The image is heavily based on a genuinely religious icon of St George I’ve appropriated and slightly. I feel a little bad about that, but I have literally no artistic talent and this is for a personal creative project, so I think we’re fine.]
We aren’t done, though! I also have some ideas for the less-elaborate pennant banners for the Knights Errant:
I’m not sure which of these two looks better. I’m leaning toward the top one, but the latter means that I could have one blue banner for the ‘blue’ knights errant and one white banner for the ‘white’ knights errant. (This is the heraldry for the town of Nowy Sącz, Poland.)
At any rate, we still have to fix the scale for 28mm wargaming and replace the ink in the ol’ printer, so it might be a little while off yet - but in the meantime, do enjoy a Bretonnian-themed update, the first in a little while.
The last of the casualty markers! Woo! L-R: A knight of the realm’s horse writhes in pain, a questing knight comes down, and a dying knight errant kneels beside his dead horse.
Not really feeling the Bretonnians lately, so I’m focusing on A Secret Project but I wanted these off the dang desk where they’ve been sitting for a while. Getting close to Project’s End now.
Miniatures by Gripping Beast, bases by war-bases.co.uk.
On the left, two disordered tokens for the archers (Perry Twins). On the right, two casualty markers - a dismounted knight errant defends himself from incoming fire; on the right, two dismounted questing knights fall under a hail of arrows (Gripping Beast).
No blood effects and I’ll tidy up the bases after the grass dries. Any suggestions for the fletching on the enemy arrows? I was going to paint them Crusade white but changed my mind after the basecoat.
Peasant wound markers. I should possibly add some blood effects, although I’ve never worked with them, so I’m hesitating. Will add some water effects to one base once the grass dries, see how it looks.
Originally these were going to be made up to match each peasant unit (two trebuchets, two archers, skirmishing archers) but I’ve decided to keep most slightly more generic. The running chap has dropped a bow next to him, and the giant Citadel skirmisher goes with the skirmishers, but the rest can probably work with anyone. Gives me a bit more flexibility.
Quick snapshot of the latest (nearly-)finished models. Still have to add transfers and static grass.
You’ll notice one is missing a shield. That’s because I’ve finally run out of Knights of the Realm plastic kite shields. If anyone has any they want to sell me, I’d be extremely eager.
The guys over at the Mantic forums have been asking me for some group photos. I’m not entirely comfortable with a ~photo shoot~ at this stage in the project, as most of the knights lack transfers, and the Knights Errant lack banners as does the BSB. I’d also like to get some movement trays.
But in the meantime, @idisimages was willing to snap a few shots of the army on the shelf, so. Here you go.
I started this blog to keep track of this project, which a lot of you might not realise, as I only started getting notes on this thing when I started doing Warhammer 40K projects. That’s alright; 40K has been more popular than its older cousin for many, many years now.
It’s a bit of a shame that I’ve put this project to one side for so long, though, as I’m fairly proud of it. Learned a lot, painting it, and the overall effect on the table is quite good. Still need to do all the transfers of coats of arms and the banners, but that’s okay.
Anyway, a few weeks ago, I managed to take the Crusade out for a game! For pretty much the first time ever! I think they (unpainted) had a game back in the dying days of the hobby, around WFB 7th edition, and I played a few skirmishes against @idisimages in order to learn the Kings of War rules, but that’s been it for years.
The local KoW scene is quite strong, and a passing comment in the Oldhammer group on facebook led a local chap to offering me a game. As you can see, he took some gribbly undead to face down my noble chevaliers.
I haven’t really been feeling the blogging mojo for the past little while (as you’ve been able to tell), and so I’m not really up for a blow-by-blow of the game. The short version is this: Kings of War is a game of movement, and I’m quite rusty at that. Mr Undead was a gentleman and a sport, though. He offered loads of tips and advice.
I tried a few luring tactics with Knights Errant (Villein Initiates) to bring his units closer to my hammer units (especially the Questing Knights (Order of the Abyssal Hunt) units. The luring part worked…
But the hammer part was sadly lacking. Rubber lance syndrome! The bane of my old Empire army!
Still, it was a cracker of a game, lots of units bouncing around all over the place. In the end, it was actually a draw on objectives (thanks to my opponent telling me where to move some knights to hold two of them!), but he definitely had the edge on kill points, so I’d call it a win for him and a loss for me.
I don’t think he has a blog or an Instagram, which is a shame - his photos came out a lot better than mine, which are frustratingly more blurred even than usual.
I hope to have more games in the future. I’ve toyed with the idea of playing at the CanCon tournament in January, but I don’t think I’m really in a place where I want to take these guys there. Transporting them is extremely anxiety-inducing!
Anyway, from here on in, it’s photo spam. Hopefully you guys can follow the flow of battle without any more input from me.
If you get lost: the blue-and-white chaps, of whom there are fewer and fewer? Those are the knights of Bretonnia. Dying.
sigh
