Evil Eye Coaster – Pattern

Black, blue and white – colours we see on evil eye amulets. What were its origins and where did it come from? When making this evil eye coaster, this question came to mind and that led to a bit of Googling. No, I am not yet at the “Hold on, let me Chat GPT this” stage. I have been told that GPT has the answers to everything but AI has given me false information so the reliability is still a little doubtful.

Anyway, I did do a bit of searching and it seems the origins are quite old – in fact, very, very old. The colours we associate with it are later developments but the concept of the evil eye has been there since centuries. It was believed, and still is I guess, that some people possess the capacity to give a ‘stare’ or nazar that could cause harm and the amulet had the power ward off this evil stare or nazar.

The evil eye symbol has undergone iterations but the belief it carries has lived on and with celebrities endorsing it, the popularity has seen new heights. If you want to read a detailed report on the evil eye, an article from BBC can prove to be insightful – The strange power of the ‘evil eye’.

While I may not be a great believer there is a friend who is an ardent believer. In a party of 15 friends, someone’s phone was found to be lying around. A glance at the home screen revealed an evil eye image and instantly the owner was identified. So, recently when she requested me to make her some coasters this idea immediately came to mind.

I tried looking up some patterns. They were scarce, and those present were not appealing enough to me. There would surely be some beautiful pattern out there but, alas, none came forth.

The next step was to create my own. If you know the language crochet, forming words and sentences can be fairly easy. That is exactly what I did and what a beautiful story I weaved. A series of double crochet clusters round after round and there we have an eye catching Evil Eye Coaster.
