Fixed star Arcturus, Alpha Boötis, is a 1st magnitude single star on the left knee of the Herdsman, Boötes constellation.
Magnitude variable −0.05, spectral type K2III, color orange to red. [1]
Alpha Bootis is traditionally and officially named Arcturus. From its ancient Greek name Ἀρκτοῦρος, “the Bear Watcher, or Guardian,” referring to the nearby bear constellation (Ursa Major). Reapplied in Renaissance times. An alternative meaning of the name is “Guardian of the North,” where the Greek word ἄρκτος, “bear,” also came to mean “north,” by its association with the northerly celestial bear. [2]

Arcturus Astrology
Fixed star Arcturus is a variable star of the spectral type K2, which indicates the planetary nature of Mars.
Anonymous of 379 AD said Arcturus is like Jupiter and Mars. [3]
ARCTURUS. α Boötis.
Notes. A golden-yellow star situated on the left knee of Boötes. From Arktouros, the Bear Guard, Also called Arctophilax, the Bear Watcher; and Alchameth, Azimech, and other variants of Al Simak, the Lofty Onne. According to Bullinger Arcturus means He Cometh, as was called Smat, One who rules, and Bau, the Coming One, by the Egyptians.
Influence. According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Mars and Jupiter, but Alvidas substitutes Venus and Mercury conjoined, It gives riches, honors, high renown, self-determination and prosperity by navigation and voyages.
Magical. Arcturus is one of the 15 Behenian Fixed Stars. Its image is a horse, wolf, or man dancing. It cures fevers, retains the blood and acts as an astringent. Rules jasper and plantain. [4]
ARCTURUS. α Boötis. A golden orange star in the left knee of Bootes. “The Bear Keeper.” Spectral Class: KO. A giant star.
The star conveys to its natives success in fine arts, business, good fortunes, but many anxious moments, high honors, high office. Turbulence possible.
NOTE: Spica, a white star in the left hand of Virgo, offers many good things in the life of the native so endowed, while Arcturus, a yellow star in the knee, offers a boost to material things in the life of the same nativities. Judge carefully. [5]
Arcturus, Alpha Bootis. Arcturus, Bear Leader-Guardian, means observer of the Great Bear, or the Saucepan or Big Dipper, respectively. Main star of constellation Bootis (driver of oxen) has a Jupiter-Mars nature, and a reputation of achieving justice through power. It therefore makes the native belligerent and quarrelsome, especially if attached to Mars and Jupiter by conjunction. An enterprising spirit is here the rule, as indicated by Jupiter-Mars. Lasting success is promised if further good aspects are present. If critically aspected, the good influence will be hampered or made into a real handicap. If involved in legal action, such a native may lose all.
Between Spica and Arcturus star there is a minor difference in longitude and a very large distance in latitude. A blend of mutual influences is frequently given. Although Spica is much larger and will dominate, it may require more positive character by blending with Arcturus. [6]
Prime star of Bootes is Arcturus, at one time the name for the Constellation itself, meaning the Driver of the Bear, Arctos (which is why our northern polar region is called the Arctic, of course). The Great Bear is obviously the most formidable creature there, and the point of Bootes’ spear is menacingly close the bear’s rump in case shouting should not be enough.
Arcturus is a fine big yellow star, easily seen if one follows down a little from the curved sweep of the Bear’s stars (the handle of The Plough, or Dipper), and one may continue the sweep down to the horizon to meet the all-important Spica, Ishtar, Queen of Heaven. The two stars are almost conjunct by longitude, leading the Arabs to see Arcturus as her protector: Al Haris al Sama, Protector of Heaven, and Al Haris al Samak, Protector of the Defenseless One.
So there we see the role of Arcturus: a protector, yes, but an unbiased protector of all. While we take what we may from Spica, from this symbol of the Heavens and Earth together, we are protected. But abuse that bounty, or take it from others, or deny it to them, and the Regent-Protector steps in upon us as upon any other predator. We are ourselves that same Regent, of course, so that it is our own hand and deed that calls us sharply to order. That is why older texts warn of Arcturus above the the inviting Spica, as though God has maliciously placed a ‘bad’ star right on a ‘good’ one. One must marvel at the debased kind of astrology that does not accept a need to give as well as to receive of life’s bounties. [7]
Fixed star Arcturus rules two inches below the navel. [8]
Boötes Constellation
According to Ptolemy the influence of the constellation is like that of Mercury and Saturn, though the star Arcturus is like Mars and Jupiter. It is said to give prosperity from work, strong desires, a tendency to excess, a fondness for rural pursuits, together with some liking for occultism. The Kabalists associate it with the Hebrew letter Teth and the 9th Tarot Trump, “The Hermit.” [4]

0°30′ orb): This is important to the entire endocrine system. There is a great stimulation of energy for those who are creative and artistic. This can be great physical energy in whatever art form the person is engaged. Generally it is a creative art form where the body must be used to create it. This can be the artist, the musician, the sculptor, and all other forms of creativity. Although the art form may not be a physical one, these persons will put it into a physical form. This can be the artist who overworks, thus creating an imbalance in their system. Their kidneys are affected first and later, many ailments appear that their immune system cannot overcome. Creativity is their main topic in life and it is far overdone. They simply do not know how to rest or eat properly. Usually they do not take time out to eat, and these are persons who need a partner that can make them take the time to eat and rest. Many find just such a partner who can tend to their needs. This may not necessarily be a marriage partner, but it could be a close friend or relative. [8]

Saturn conjunct Arcturus: Honest, selfish, inclined to be mean, shrewd in business, materialistic, favorable for gain and speculation and for domestic matters, but early difficulty in married life, favorable for children but disagreement with one of them. [4]
This has the opposite action than Mars on this degree. These people would love to create something but are unable to find the inspiration to do so. They have an internal sadness over their lack of creativity which affects the kidneys. They do not have any creative outlets and have no idea as to how artistic persons bring about their creation. Even music does not move some individuals, and they do not have the vision necessary to be creative. The kidneys become clogged as a result and do not function freely. This planet at this point will eventually break down the health of the native. They become isolated and weakened, functioning on a low energy level. This is a karmic position in that they misguided and misused their creative energy in a previous life and they are therefore restricted in this life. [8]

Edgar Cayce on Arcturus
Also we find the Sun and Arcturus, the greater Sun, giving of the strength in mental and spiritual elements toward developing of soul and of the attributes toward the better forces in earth’s spheres. This brings, especially, the conditions of these characters:
One that is exceptional in many ways, manners and faculties, especially in those of mental forces having great vision in every direction, especially those of the unseen elements, bringing then much psychic and occult forces to the body.
The highest conception of all domestic relations, the highest conceptions of honor. The highest conceptions of respect. The highest conceptions in every relation in friendship and in every element relating to others.
This brings the forces that give the greater elements in the life, yet with the undue influence by the Moon’s forces, when square to Saturn and Mars, brings doubts within the body’s mental forces. In will’s realm then must the entity bring the better forces when such conditions arise. (137-4)
Arcturus, the wonderful, the beautiful! As the bright and glorious light. (827-1)
Arcturus comes in this entity’s chart, or as a central force from which the entity came again into the earth-material sojourns. For, this is the way, the door out of this system. Yet purposefully did the entity return in this experience. (2454-3)
Not that the sun that is the center of this solar system is all there is. For the entity has attained to that realm even of Arcturus, or that center from which there may be the entrance into other realms of consciousness. And the entity has chosen in itself to return to the earth for a definite mission. (2823-1)
And Arcturus! For the entity has gone out and returned purposefully. (5259-1)
As indicated, or as has been indicated in other sources besides this as respecting this very problem, – Arcturus is that which may be called the center of this universe, through which individuals pass and at which period there comes the choice of the individual as to whether it is to return to complete there – that is, in this planetary system, our sun, the earth sun and its planetary system – or to pass on to others. This was an unusual step, and yet a usual one. (5749-14)
