How to Select the Right Paint for Mason Jar Crafts
Glass Paint
There are glass paints available that don't need to be fired (baked or heated) and those that do. Of the kinds that need to
be heated, some new glass paints have been formulated to
be heated in a standard kitchen oven opening up the glass
painting options for families rather than just artists. The glass
paints tend to have a translucent quality and can be mixed
with thinner for an even lighter tint. These work well for
painting mason jars that will be candle holders and vases.
Glass Paint Pens
Glass paint pens have the same options and qualities as the glass paints applied by brush, except that the artist has more
control over the application due to it being a convenient pen
style application.
Acrylic Paint
Acrylic paint is opaque or solid when applied. This paint can be thinned to apply with a more translucent quality. Complete
scenes or murals can be painted on mason jars or glass jars
using acrylic paints. Acrylic paints can also be easily applied
with brushes, stamps, and sponges. Acrylic paints don't need
to be heated for curing; however, this is not as durable as
glass paints. Mason jars painted with acrylic paints will benefit
from a brush application or spray of sealer or clear coat,
commonly found in art and crafts stores.
Spray Paint
Spray paint is an economical background for a mason jar craft where you desire to have the background a solid color. Once
the mason jar or glass jar is sprayed a solid color, then it can
be painted with acrylic paints, craft paints, puffy paints, or have
clay, sparkles, stickers, decals, or other embellishments
applied to it.

Nail Polish
Nail polish is a fun option that is widely available. Painting mason jars with nail polish and fine tips is an excellent way to
use up old nail polish. Older nail polish that is too thick and
chunky for finger nail application works superb for painting.
Thick nail polish also works well to hold embellishments
such as decals, nail stickers, flowers, and sparkles.
