Week 8: Adapt and Preserve Cities If I could design a third place, I'd design something like Borders bookstore, a multistory library that gets more quiet the higher up you go. The first floor has a cafe for people to buy cheap food and drinks and an area for live or recorded music. The second floor has a place for small kids to have story time and for others to study or work on the computers. The top floor is dedicated for people who require absolute silence to get work done. #iiturbanism

It appears to be all over for the Borders bookselling chain. Almost 11,000 employees will lose their jobs when the company closes its remaining 400 stores by the end of September. Though the two chains pioneered the book megastore business 40 years ago, Borders made some critical missteps over the years that cost it the business.

U.S. bookstore chain Books-A-Million Inc. said it has dropped its pursuit of 30 outlets it intended to buy from Borders Group Inc.
