When an elevator arrives a a floor, it is designed to slow to a halt rather than stop suddenly before arriving at the desired floor. The elevator is acted on by an upward force over the course of a few seconds, which decreases the force of the impact. This keeps the cables from having to withstand huge tension, and out bodies from feeling like we fell from over 50 feet.
