Two forces, among others, may help to shape the future of Chinese characters in the written language of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. First, there is apparently a growing wariness about the inability of the younger generations to understand their traditional culture, given their poor Chinese character literacy in South Korea and even Vietnam.

This image is the Vietnamese alphabet. The language is similar to the American alphabet, except there are accents. Also, ther letters "f,j,w,z" are not found in the alphabet. In the olden days, Vietnamese was similar to Arabic in the sense that both were made out of brush strokes. A difference is the modern day Vietnamese has accents, where as Arabic does not.

Of course, the Viet Cong also produced posters. Some posters were just hand-written on whatever paper the Viet Cong could find. Here, the propaganda message is written on writing paper. This poster to South Vietnamese troops was found in December 1965 and is similar to the South Vietnamese pair we show; a short all-text message.
