Overview
codedb is a Zig code-intelligence engine that indexes a local repository and serves symbol lookup, callers, outlines, dependency graphs and trigram search to coding agents over MCP (stdio) or a localhost HTTP server. It has no edit capability; the client uses its own tools to change code. Default hybrid retrieval in codedb_context uses hosted embeddings, and semantic=local keeps it on-device.
Who it is for: Developers giving MCP-capable coding agents fast repo navigation
Strengths
- Native binaries for macOS, Linux and Windows; installer registers MCP in about 16 clients
- Structural queries run locally: symbols, callers, call paths, outlines, dependency graph, trigram search
- Reported cold index of 6,315 files in 346 ms on an M4 Pro
- Parsers for Zig, C/C++, Python, TS/JS, Rust, Go, PHP, Ruby and more; CLI and HTTP also available
Weaknesses
- Marked alpha: APIs and snapshot formats can change
- Default hybrid retrieval sends data to hosted embeddings unless semantic=local is set
- Each MCP process runs its own watcher, so many clients multiply background work
- Installer adds a Claude Code PreToolUse hook by default; opting out needs an env var or file
What it needs
- no GPU
- Needs Hosted embeddings service (default hybrid retrieval), DeepWiki remote MCP (optional, installer-registered)
- port 7719
