Rail Arts District Studio Cruise 2010 - 300th post

Advice to artists and galleries: Don't give out your email address unless you intend to answer your email.

The Rail Arts District is in Avondale Estates, Georgia just east of Decatur. It's a group of galleries and workshops in a light industrial area. On Valentines day your host and my two architecture tourist daughters cruised the RAD.

We saw glass blowing at Duckbill Studios.

We saw pot throwing at Mudfire Pottery Studio. Their gallery featured witty, folksy work by Mudfire founder, Erik Haagensen.

At Studio 2850 we ran into Jim Wakeman whom we'd met last year. If you have to be told who "Hoss" and Little Joe are, you might have trouble. Jim is on the left with your briefly bearded host.

These caught my eye at Bart Webb Studio. Well everything caught my eye there, not a gallery of serene abstract landscapes.

Gordo and Flacka are dead but I was feeling OK.

Here is Matt Armstrong at Little Tree Studios.

Music and art at Cutting Edge Gallery.

Two artists were working at Alcove Gallery.

Enjoyed the dog jumping through the flaming hoop.

Scottdale Gables

Scottdale Mills? Scottdale, Georgia? Agnes Scott College? Same family. When I'm in the area, I take a little drive around. It's only a few blocks. I am a gable guy and swoon at views like this. (There is a secret picture for garden bloggers Tara and Pam, will they notice?)

P1000223-2010-01-13-2-Scottdale-Gables

Scottdale is one of the Atlanta area's milltowns, preserved differently than those in Cabbagetown, The Old 4th Ward, and Home Park.

It's not in a "hip" area. These 2 are on a green, unlike any other in Atlanta, as far as I know. No hip shops or restaurants; no cool residents in sight (but they must surely be very cool). No tourists, no parking problems, no scene.

These 2 houses were built as duplexes. They didn't need these nice details. Notice the two chimneys, one for each apartment.

The modest chimney has looked great every day of it's life.

You see these hipped roof porches on period houses everywhere.

Faith Walk is the house with the fancy gable window.

I don't think the other house has a name but it's a beauty too. This is the secret picture for garden bloggers: Gravel and grass, know what I mean?

There are single family millhouses too, one in pink, or is it salmon?

You visit the Dekalb Farmers Market right? So drive a bit further out on Ponce. Find the antique stores in cute little houses, turn left and find the green. There you are.

Painted Eggs - Happy Easter

These are from "2009 Rail Arts District Studio Cruise, Avondale Estates" I regret that I don't know the artist, just that these eggs were at the Academy Theater which hosted several artists for the cruise.

Also at the Academy Theater, this faux rug painted on a concrete floor.

We visit the 2009 Rail Arts District Studio Cruise, Avondale Estates

Today (March 6, 2000) I'm participating in Fifi Flowers Fashionable Friday. Fifi is quite an artist and since art is always fashionable yet always timeless we do gallery cruises, strolls and walks. Be sure to see the slide show and make it full screen.

Last night two of your hosts visited the annual art cruise in Avondale Estates Georgia. Cruise? Well, we needed to drive a little as you can see from the map. We had the best time. The artists were friendly. The cruisers were friendly. What a great way to spend a Saturday evening.

You can find our Flickr slide of the 2009 RAD Studio Cruise right here.

There were a bunch of people taking advantage of a warm Georgia February evening.

We have just one small request to the organizers. We'd like a web page that lists every artist, every gallery, and every email on the tour.
