It was said of the Douglases, “Men have seen the stream, but who has seen the source?” the name supposedly comes from the Gaelic; 'dubh glas', meaning black water or stream. Sir James Douglas is perhaps one of the most notable members of the clan. Known in Scottish history as ‘the good’ Douglas, the trusted lieutenant of Robert Bruce and a Scottish hero. to the English however, he was known more sinisterly as 'The Black Douglas', given his ferocity as a battle-hardened knight.
