WASHINGTON IRVING - (1783-1859) An AUTHOR, essayist, poet, born in New York City youngest of 11 children. He has been called the “Father of the American Short Story”, and best known for works such as "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". His works also include biographies of George Washington and Muhammad. He also served and US ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846. He wrote under the pseudonyms Dietrich Knickerbocker, Jonathan Oldstyle, and Geoffrey Crayon.
